Series: 50th Anniversary of the Free Speech Movement

Part: 4

In the fall of 1964 students at the University of California embarked upon an epic battle, one that would last throughout the term. It became the Free Speech Movement and helped launch the student movement of the Sixties. This four part series examines that struggle, its aftermath and its legacy.

In Part One, UC Professor Robert Cohen and FSM student leader Jack Weinberg discuss the events of that fall, now fifty years ago.
In Part Two FSM leaders Barbara Garson and Frank Bardacke discuss the meaning of the movement and its connections to the Anti-Vietman War Movement.
In Part Three, UC Berkeley Professors Michael Watts and Wendy Brown discuss the legacy of the Free Speech Movement first in the South Africa Divestment movement of the Eighties and then in the ongoing debate about the meaning of Free Speech.

In this final segment of our four part series, UC Santa Barbara Professor Chris Newfield discusses the contemporary issue of student debt, UC Berkeley student leader Amanda Armstrong discusses the challenges facing students today, and UC Berkeley Professor Richard Walker argues in favor of renewing and deepening a system of genuine public education.
